The alphorn
Today, no one can say for sure when and where the first alphorn was made. In Switzerland, the alphorn was first mentioned in writing in 1527.
In the 18th century, the impoverished rural population of the Bernese Oberland played the alphorn. The instrument was therefore derided as a beggar's horn and almost fell into oblivion.
With the advent of Romanticism and tourism in the 19th century, the alphorn was rediscovered along with folklore. The Unspunnen Festival in 1805 is now regarded as the hour of the alphorn's rebirth. With the founding of the Swiss Yodelling Association in 1910, the alphorn was ‘cultivated’, i.e. adapted to today's well-tempered tuning. Today, the alphorn is regarded as a Swiss national symbol.

Bernatone Alphorn
A Bernatone alphorn is made exclusively from local spruce wood from the mountain forests of Habkern. From the raw tree trunk to the finished instrument, the wood is processed and refined by the Tschiemer family:
- Hans Tschiemer (father) carefully saws the logs in his sawmill.
- Heinz Tschiemer (owner of Bernatone GmbH) uses the wood to make the well-known Bernatone alphorns.
We can tell you the exact origin of the wood of every alphorn!
